It’s like the Bootster Boost, but a little bit better, more on brand, and still yellow!

Summer School Electronics is back with another new release to kick off the fall! After releasing the very brilliantly designed Class Reunion earlier this summer, Summer School is bringing back an old favorite from their early lineup, but with a twist. Today on September 12th Summer School Electronics has announced the Extra Credit Boost, a dual voiced boost controlled by the central toggle switch.
On the right side of the toggle you get their discontinued Bootster Boost circuitry, with a volume and brightness knob for mixing more mid and high end presence into your signal. On the left side of the toggle you get an op amp boost, where only the volume knob is active. This is similar to the DOD 250-style circuitry of their Gus Drive, which happens to be one of my most beloved pedals.
Demo Time
In this video I’m playing my Moon Guitars Asteroid into this boost and the UAFX Dream as an amp and cab sim. All of that runs into a Walrus Canvas DI box and UA Volt76 audio interface and then into my laptop.
My Quick Thoughts
A more detailed write up of my thoughts will be available on Ultimate Guitar this weekend but in the meantime I thought I’d put a few quick notes here to get something out on release day.
When you’re in op amp mode the volume knob adds a ton of nice gain into the mix, it’s fantastic. You get some of the lighter drive sounds of a DOD 250 or Gus Drive, all while still having the dual functionality on the other side of the toggle.
I think you can hear this really well in the demo, but the right side (Bootster) adds so much warmth, body, and content to the sort of thin clean sound I had dialed in for this video. It really rounds out the P90 clean tone into a sparkly and powerful clean tone.
Overall you get two really great, useful sounds out of one simple to use pedal. It’s a boost with a purpose, not just another clean boost or simple clone of a famous circuit for you to drool over. If you need a boost, this is a damn good one! Stay tuned for more thoughts soon over on Ultimate Guitar.
