It’s been literally YEARS since I tried an affordable wireless system, but will it stick this time?

One of the first things I ever reviewed on this site was actually a wireless guitar system from Donner. That was an insanely long time ago, when this site was operated very differently. Fast forward to today, in 2023, and I’m taking a second crack a wireless guitar systems. This time, we’re checking out the Lekato WS-100 wireless system.
This is a small, portable system that comes stored in a charging case, making it very road friendly. It claims to be effective up to a 100 feet distance from the transmitter and receiver, but 100 feet would have me down the road from my house, so that was tough to ground truth.
I’ll cut to the main point though; a lot of these wireless systems, especially the affordable ones love to talk a big game. This WS-100 checks in at just about $50 USD, so I had some high hopes compared to the flimsier Donner wireless system I used years ago. And for the most part, the Lekato system delivers. Here’s my quick demo of the product below, with comparison to my normal Runway audio cables.
I think the tonal difference is very minimal between the really nice Runway cables and the Lekato WS-100. There’s still SOME difference, primarily there seems to be a drop in some high frequencies and overall body. Now, I can really only tell this because this is my rig, and my ears are fine tuned for it. If I played a strangers rig in this comparison, I’m not so sure I’d notice too much of a difference. That’s because the WS-100 seems to be pretty good at retaining signal. Perfect? Nope, but certainly usable, especially for just jamming around the house or even some live gigs.
In fact, this is a fun product that I’ll probably keep using around the house. It will certainly let me stretch out when I’m workshopping guitar riffs or melodies in my bedroom with my practice amp. And there’s real value here for the money in that regard. I can see many people arguing it’s great for live gigs, though I’d rather use this as a backup system personally. I’ve used it a bit over these weeks and it seems to hold up, but I’ll report back if it starts to suffer quality issues over time.
Overall, the fact that I can hear a difference through my standard recording setup means I’ll probably never use this for recording. That’s sort of the one place you really do want pristine performance. Maybe for low stakes demos? But I generally have a plug and play rig whether it’s for quick demos or legit recordings. I can see it being fun live, but I’m not often playing big enough stages that my 10 foot or 20 foot guitar cables are limiting me.
If you’re interested in going wireless, the WS-100 is a great entry point. I’d also recommend it as a solid backup option for a more expensive wireless system. But either way, there’s no reason not to buy or try this product if you’re interested. No major failures, no red flags so far. So go grab one and chime in if you feel like it’s a worthy addition!
